We love sharing all of our behind-the-scenes charity work here at rue21! And one of our favorite yearly events is the annual clothing sample sale! Our 2019 summer intern program conducted a 3-day sample sale for employees, friends and family this July—with all of the proceeds given to rue21’s employee charity, rueGIVESback.
In 2015, we launched rueGIVESback, a philanthropic initiative dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of our customers and associates. After unpacking, hanging, tagging and slinging thousands of the styles that you see shot on our models or showing up on our Insta feed, we raised over $23,000 to charity! Bonus: what styles weren’t adopted by our employees, we donated to the Foster Love Project and the Paralyzed Veterans of America—aka, 40 additional boxes of clothing.
We could not be more excited about this project and hope you are, too. Our intern team killed it this year, going through boxes of clothing, creating flyers, and getting the word out about the sale. Within the first two days of the sale, the team had sold over 4,000 styles. 👏

Intern Jackie Skarbek, who worked (and shopped) the sale said,
“The sample sale was a hit! When we opened the doors for friends and family night, a flood of excited shoppers came inside and helped give back to the community! It was also fun spending hours alongside my fellow interns!”
Social Media Specialist, Cara Berrigan shopped and sale and said,
“The sample sale has never gone so well. Everything was organized, product was always stocked, and the interns were high energy! I’m happy to be a part of a company that gives back in a fun way!”

We want to thank everyone who helped organize the sale and participated in this awesome charity! It’s not everyday that a cafeteria turns into a full-blown store. We can’t wait to see how much we can raise at the sample sale next year.
rueGIVESback is an employee-based charity designed to help our customers and employees in times of tragedy, and to provide outreach to our local communities and shelters. The money we raise here goes back into our rue21 family and neighborhoods, and we’re so proud of the work we get to do and the aide we can provide. If you want to help our your community, try searching for local charities in your city or state, checking Facebook for local groups or go old-school by picking up a city paper.
Until then, remember to use #YOUinrue for a chance to be featured on our social platforms!
